Mesothelioma Empowerment

Carbon Nanotubes Mimic Asbestos Fibers

Nanotechnology has revolutionized multiple industries in its broad application across medical, industrial, consumer and technological sectors. However, certain types of nanotechnology, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), have been shown to closely resemble asbestos-fibers both in structure and durability and thus pose potential health risks.

In a study conducted among three international research organizations, scientists conclude that indeed, CNTs mimic asbestos fibers when inhaled and can lead to irritation and future tumor formation. According to the study, “Toxicologic studies in rodents demonstrated that some types of carbon nanotubes can induce mesothelioma.” Despite their benefits, efforts must be made to minimize exposure to CNTs.
