THE GOVERNOR

GREETINGS:

It is my pleasure to extend my encouragement to all Pennsylvanians and their families who are suffering from the asbestos cancer, Mesothelioma, and to the devoted community of medical professionals, patients, and families who strive to raise public awareness of this condition.

Mesothelioma is a disease that remains unknown to much of the public, yet has taken the lives of all too many people right here in Pennsylvania. Linked to significant asbestos exposure, Mesothelioma is defined by an aggressive tumor of the lung or stomach lining and severe pain. Although it is not widely understood, it is no less devastating.

I am greatly encouraged by the dedicated community of patients, families, physicians, and researchers who are committed to preventing, accurately diagnosing, and developing effective treatments for the disease. The Pennsylvania Chapter of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF) is an important part of this effort. Their work has made a tremendous impact in the medical community, on public awareness, and is gradually leading us closer to a future free of Mesothelioma.

As Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I am honored to join with the Pennsylvania Chapter of MARF and the citizens of the commonwealth in raising awareness of Mesothelioma and to recognize September 26, 2003 as Mesothelioma Awareness Day. Best wishes to those who continue to fight the disease and to all who strive to bring health and hope to their fellow citizens.
